Dr. Black’s Reiki Journey
Let me take this opportunity to tell you a little about my own personal Reiki journey and myself. I discovered Reiki about 36 years ago while I was going back to university for my undergraduate Bachelor of Science Degree in Earth Sciences as well as completing my teacher training.
Married with three young boys, I commuted to university, worked a part time job as a graphic artist, was an alpine ski instructor, and was dancing professionally. Needless to say, I had a bit of stress in my life. A friend told me about a young woman in the area who worked holistically with massage, Cranio Sacral Therapy, and Reiki. This beautiful woman, named Molly, introduced me to the unbelievable ability my body had to heal and calm down. At the time she told me to find my path in Reiki, but it didn’t seem like one of the things I could add to my already full plate, financially and emotionally. Molly was an essential tool in my being able to complete not only my undergraduate degree and ease into my first teaching jobs in local high schools, she also helped me go all the way through my graduate degrees in Educational Technology (MA) and Science Education (emphasis in Physics)(PhD). Of course, there were many other amazing helpers along the way: my deep faith in God, my incredibly supportive husband, my three incredible boys, family members and friends. After I completed my graduate school and came to British Columbia, I searched for a Reiki Master who could serve the same role as Molly; unfortunately, I just didn’t seem to find that person. Finally, after about 14 years of serving as a University professor at the University of Victoria, and some disturbingly serious health issues, I left the my chosen career to care for myself. It was during Yoga Teacher Training in Jelapa, Mexico that I had a Reiki treatment by the lovely Anna, who incorporated crystals in her treatments. Crystals appealed to me all the way back during my Geology studies, so I found the combination of Reiki and crystals a perfect blend. Anna told me my path had waited too long for me to find it and that as soon as I returned to BC, I needed to find a Reiki Master and continue. This profound experience led me to do just that and I found the amazing Delaine Walsh who attuned to me with my Usui Level One and taught me how to use crystal bowls for healing. Unfortunately, Delaine suffered a serious break to her spine and was unable to lead me any further on the path, but through divine intervention and the incredible network of CRA members, I found the wise, beautiful, and amazing Tania Bakas who led me through the rest of my levels and firmly rooted my feet (and hands) on the Reiki path. Since then I have gone on to become a Reiki Master Teacher, but more importantly have experienced first hand the timely and healing benefits of Reiki.
