Your Journey to Wellness 500 Hour Programme

Dr. Black's Yoga Therapy Programme provides students with a comprehensive yoga programme designed to guide therapists to a point in their study where they can provide significant help for their clients and students.

All our programmes are on request only.  We take private group bookings for a minimum of three to a maximum of ten students.  Put together your own group of friends and book your training with us directly.  We will schedule the training with your group and our availability to best accommodate an individualized and personalized programme.

Our programme offers yoga  students several choices to ensure their personal practice fits with their chosen path of yoga. Whether a student desires to work with those in chronic pain, injury, childhood stresses, day-to-day healthy living, or help enhance client spirituality, our Individualized Yoga Wellness Programme will guide them on their way.

Based on current and timely research in the field yoga therapy practices, our programme remains current with our ever-changing world by guiding students to understand effective yoga practices for their clients.

What sets this Yoga Programme apart from many others in the field is our inclusion of our Yoga Students with our local studio classes and clientele. We encourage our Yoga Students to establish their own clientele after they have seen Yoga in action with Dr. Black's clients.

In addition,  we are the front runner in using Infrared treatments with our clients alongside our Yoga and Spiritually minded practices helping those living and managing pain in their daily lives establish a new “normal” of healthy living practices.

Come join us in an all-encompassing practice of self study, yoga, philosophy, anatomy & physiology, consideration of special therapeutic conditions and healing through our peaceful sanctuary as part of your path to better yourself or honor you higher self in a devotion to help others.

Our programme utilizes Integrative Yoga practices and offers the strength and appropriate modifications of a Classical Ashtanga Hatha Yoga method practice to fit all levels of abilities as well as all ages of teacher/practitioner from adolescent to the active older clients. We encourage a personable, home like feeling for all our classes, trainings and workshops. We strive to know all our students, what their particular needs are, and endeavour to ensure you have a safe and beautiful yoga practice.

Dr. Black's unique philosophy is to incorporate yoga as wellness into our individual daily lives, and to take the approach of teaching the full yogic tradition and grounding it fully in appropriate and effective teaching practices. In addition, Heat to Heal™ incorporates scientific research, a full range of Holistic Therapies and modalities with regard to health and nutrition, and exploration of nature to enhance and encourage a mindful approach to the yogic lifestyle.

Develop an understanding of personal health and wellness, explore Traditional Yoga writings with respect to health and wellness;


Observe, practice, and demonstrate effective teaching programmes in meditation, mantra, chanting, pranayama, and the five areas of asana of standing postures, seated forward folds, back bends, twists, and


Demonstrate an understanding of planning for wellness by using a variety of nutritional, body, mind, and spirit techniques.


Understand, explore, and demonstrate yoga as special conditions and a variety of health concerns throughout the various stages of life;


Understand and demonstrate basic and advanced anatomy as applied to a variety of conditions and life spans.


Participate daily in meditation, various levels of asana and restorative yoga asana postures, as well as in celebrating the joy of life in what ever circumstances the student is experiencing in their life.

Program Curriculum

Individual Modules

Dr. Black offers a module programme for those who wish to stretch their training out over a longer amount of time. Each module runs concurrently with our immersion programmes and offers the theme for the training. Modules are split into two or three sections and each section conducted within a three day period with additional time given to advanced students to complete assignments. Dividing modules into segments allows for more flexibility to the student’s time schedule and budgetary concerns.

These units are offered as six-day stand-alone units, three day stand alone weekend workshops, weekly courses, or as three and a half week intensives. Students may choose the module structure that best fits their individual needs.

Module 1: Introduction to Your Journey to Wellness

Introduction [YPLE 62]

This introductory session explores the various Yogic traditional texts of the Yoga Sutras, in particular the Yamas and the Niyamas, and the Bhagavad Gita for the notion of wellness and suffering. We discuss how a yogic lifestyle leads us into wellness as well as exploring professional ethics and actions of working as yoga teachers. 

Participants will discover ways to improve, build, and maintain their optimal health. Participants will learn about Topics including: Yoga Postures; Structural Body Alignment; Guided Meditation; Mindfulness; and, Understanding how Yoga enhances your life throughout the life span.

In this introductory session to students will:

  • Develop and understanding of personal health and wellness;
  • Be introduced, or return to, the Traditional Yoga texts of the Yoga Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita with intent to apply these works to our modern day perceptions of health and wellness;
  • Discuss thoroughly professional ethics and actions of working with clients as yoga teachers and explore techniques designed to nurture and establish loving, caring, and compassionate practices.

Module 2: Pain & Inflammation

Pain & Inflammation [AP 35]

Participants will learn nutritional causes of pain and inflammation, dietary and supplemental interventions. We discuss the anatomy of pain from acute to chronic and explore lifestyle approaches to managing and relieving pain through yoga and the mind-body connection through exploring the chakra system.

We are seeing an epidemic of pain and inflammatory conditions in the healthcare field. These include fibromyalgia, arthritis, allergies, atherosclerosis, diabetes, dementia, and even cancer.

Pain is the main symptom that takes most people to their medical doctors. As useful as pain is to let us know that some thing is wrong in the body, when pain becomes chronic it can be debilitating and negatively affect one’s quality of life. Inflammation is a natural part of the healing process after trauma or infection. The problem again is with chronic inflammation that is unremitting or worse, silent inflammation that one is not even aware is happening or ways of movement or exercise and diet that increase pain and inflammation. This long-term wear and tear can lead to damage and eventually disease.

To fully understand pain and inflammation we examine Western Anatomy and Physiology with regard to utilizing yogic techniques to benefit our health and establish healthy movement patterns. In this workshop, we review basic Western anatomy of the body from cellular structure to body systems of the skeletal, muscular, respiratory, digestive, endocrine, and neurological system.

In this workshop series students will:

  • Review basic Western Anatomy of the body from cellular structure to body systems of the skeletal, muscular, respiratory, digestive, endocrine, and neurological system;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of pain and inflammation from a physical (anatomical), mental and emotional perspective including, but not limited to, benefits and contraindications for movement;
  • Develop yogic programmes with meditation and gentle movement for the chakra system designed to help clients find ease from their symptoms;
  • Practice and learn meditation, mantra, pranayama, and gentle asana practices designed to reduce pain and inflammation and how to apply these in a yoga situation.

Module 3: Understanding Stress

Understanding Stress [TTP, 75]

In this busy world, it is becoming challenging to find someone who doesn’t feel stressed. This is important since most healthcare practitioners agree that stress either initiates or aggravates any health condition. Chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, headaches, gastrointestinal complaints, and even cancer can be associated with stress. Simply put, to prevent illness or to recover from illness, stress management is essential.

In this workshop, Dr. Black will teach yogic mind-body techniques such as meditation, mantra, chanting, pranayama, and gentle asana, as well as other holistic strategies, such as Mindfulness Meditation, to help practitioners control their stress response and stimulate healing. We discuss the most important nutrients to help the body cope with and recover from stress.

Fundamental yoga practices of meditation, mantra, chanting, pranayama, and the five sections of  asana (standing, seated forward folds, back bends, inversions, and twists) are introduced. As a group, we will analytically explore and practice techniques and strategies to cope with unexpected stress such as injury, illness, or death of a loved one.

In this workshop students will:

  • Develop an understanding of healthy and non-healthy levels of stress;
  • Explore yogic techniques through meditation and teaching as well as demonstrate application of learned knowledge on the chakra system to help clients develop appropriate strategies to understand and reduce stress levels.
  • Practice, learn, and teach basic meditation, mantra, chanting, pranayama, and gentle asana practices designed to relieve and reduce stress and how to apply these in a therapeutic situation.
  • Practice and learn meditation, mantra, pranayama, and gentle asana practices designed to enhance their own personal journeys to wellness and how to apply these in a teaching/learning situation.

Module 4: Auto Immune Illnesses

Auto Immune Illnesses [TTP 75]

Many people are suffering with autoimmune illnesses, so much so that it takes the joy out of daily activities and saps enthusiasm for life. This is seen with symptoms associated with a number of conditions such as hypoglycemia, adrenal fatigue, subclinical hypothyroidism, allergies, and so on.

Regardless, of the cause, there are many nutritional and lifestyle interventions that can alleviate this symptom. In this workshop, we help you consider the source of fatigue and design a program that will address specific needs of clients.

As a sufferer of Chronic Fatigue, Dr. Black has a unique hands-on approach to managing fatigue through a push/rest model, which includes yoga and holistic techniques such as meditation, mantra, pranayama, and gentle asana standing, seated, inversions, and restorative postures. As a group, we will  analyze and develop management techniques for clients during times of illness flare and help clients discover a new healthy normal.

In this workshop series students will:

  • Analyze causes and effects of autoimmune illnesses and their effects on society;
  • Develop programmes applicable to a variety of illnesses for specific clientele;
  • Practice and teach meditation, mantra, pranayama, kriyas, and asana appropriate for clientele suffering from autoimmune illnesses.
  • Practice, analyze, demonstrate, and teach the five-asana categories of standing postures, forward folds, back bends, inversions, and twists from a fundamental basic level appropriate to clients with autoimmune illnesses.

Module 5: Examining Trauma

Examining Trauma [YPLE 50]

In this workshop we explore different forms of trauma from illness, injury, abuse, accident, and more. We investigate current research and practices on trauma and develop ways to utilize yoga as a way to heal from trauma.

From a philosophical standpoint we look at trauma from an historical perspective in the yogic tradition of suffering. We explore suffering in the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras and from the lens of the Yamas and Niyamas.

We understand the sensitive nature of trauma victims and emphasize the importance of following strict ethical guidelines of working with clients traumatic experiences as well as the appropriate addressing of trauma in any classroom setting.

In this workshop participants will:

  • Explore current and past research on trauma from both a Western Science and Yogic Historical perspective from the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras;
  • Understand the sensitive nature of trauma victims and apply appropriate ethical and professional guidelines for working with these clients.

Module 6: Alternative Practices

Alternative Practices [TTP 50]

In this workshop we explore alternative practices for pain relief such as structural alignment, therapeutic touch, meditation, advanced pranayama and asana postures in the five categories of standing postures, seated forward folds, backbends, inversions, arm balances, and twists. 

Individual yoga styles such as restorative, yin, gentle hatha, and Vinyasa flow are analyzed as to appropriateness and application in therapeutic situations. We analyze, practice, and teach yoga techniques such as meditation, pranayama, mantra, and appropriate asana as a way to heal from trauma.

In this workshop participants will:

  • Explore alternative practices to modern western medicine such as structural alignment and gentle touch;
  • Practice, analyze, demonstrate, and teach the five-asana categories of standing postures, forward folds, back bends, inversions, and twists from a basic to advanced level appropriate to clients; analyze, practice, and teach yoga techniques such as meditation, pranayama, mantra, and appropriate asana as a way to heal from trauma.
  • Appropriately develop a programme advising clients how to incorporate a variety of alternative strategies to their personal health picture.

Module 7: Silence and Sound

Silence and Sound [TTP 100]

In these two workshop sessions participants explore healing with silence and healing with sound. Meditative, mantra, pranayama, and asana practices utilizing silence and sound are taught, experienced, and developed in a yogic setting.

In these workshops participants will:

  • Participate in a Silent Retreat to explore the natural healing practices of silence;
  • Explore various sound healing techniques such as Crystal bowls, music, and tuning forks;
  • Develop and teach two classes based on healing with sound utilizing meditation, mantra, pranayama, and appropriate asana postures designed to enhance healthy living practices

Module 8: Emotions, and Spirituality

Emotions, and Spirituality [YPLE 75]

Throughout our Journey to Wellness Series, Spirituality and Emotions play an integral part in our yoga practices. In this workshop we explore different ways we experience spirituality and emotions. The D.A.R.E. technique of helping emotions move through and out of our bodies is introduced (Bensoussan, 2011) and other emotional freedom techniques explored. 

We examine spirituality through the historical lens of the Yoga Sutras, especially in the eight limbs, as well as in the Bhagavad Gita. We will discuss modern day spirituality and encourage participants to practice tolerance and acceptance of each other’s individual belief system. (50 contact hours, 25 non-contact.)

In this workshop participants will:

  • Explore emotions from a western science psychology model;
  • Compare and contrast Western and Eastern thoughts on emotions;
  • Explore spirituality from a personal and group perspective;
  • Participate in meditation, mantra, pranayama, and asana practices designed to bring calmness and enhance personal spirituality;
  • Develop and teach at least one class to the group based on the D.A.R.E. technique.

Module 9: Popular Media

Popular Media [TTP 50]

In this workshop we explore how popular media effects our own wellness practices. We explore several internet sources such as the International Yoga Alliance, Yoga Glo, you-tube, and other popular media sources for specific examples of practices in standing, seated, forward folds, inversions, back bends and twists.

We analyze, physically practice, and recommend asana from these various sources of popular media as to their effectiveness for our therapeutic clientele and general yoga students. We also develop our own media resource as a group.

In this workshop participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of what popular media is and how it changes over time;
  • Explore ways media enhances or injures us on our journey to wellness;
  • Develop ways to engage clients in discussions on appropriate methods of using popular media in their lives;
  • Practice meditation, mantra, pranayama, and asana directly from popular media sources and analyze these sources as to their effectiveness;
  • Teach and lead students through an example of appropriate media asana or meditation resource they can utilize outside the studio;
  • Produce a sample media resource of an appropriate yoga class for a given situational value determined collectively as a group.

Module 10: Life Spans

Life Spans [AP 60]

In this workshop series we explore health over the lifespan. We look at healthy (or non-healthy) childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and aging as well of the end of life. We return to our Western Anatomy and  hysiology Model of learning from cellular structure throughout the body systems as it applies across the lifespan. In addition, we discuss, practice and teach appropriate meditation, mantra, pranayama, and asana for each life style. We explore contraindications of practice for various life stages as well.

In this workshop participants will:

  • Develop a clear picture of health across our lifespans;
  • Explore ways to make each stage of life more fulfilling through yoga practices;
  • Analyze, practice, and demonstrate teaching of meditation, mantra, kriyas, pranayama and asana postures for children, teens, young adults, mid-age adults, older adults, and seniors.

Module 11: Practicum

Practicum [Practicum 40]

In this final workshop, participants present their practicum work with at least three clients selected during the course of the training. This workshop helps students develop their record keeping and teaching skills utilizing yoga in ways to help others on their journey to wellness.

In addition, students will teach five themed classes throughout the series: one Restorative Class; one Myofascial Yin Class; one Gentle Hatha Class; one Vinyasa Flow class; and, one class of their choice. Each class is two hours in duration and includes appropriate music, props, theme, meditation, mantra, pranayama, asana postures, and closure.

Individual class times and topics determined during the introductory workshop at the beginning of the training or on an individual basis with lead trainer.

In this workshop participants will:

  • Present their case studies of at least three clients to the lead trainer in written and verbal format;
  • Demonstrate a longitudinal method of helping clients on their journey to wellness;
  • Teach five two hour classes appropriate for clients with special needs (Restorative, Myofascial Yin, Gentle Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, and one of their choice.

Module 12: Lifestyle Application

Lifestyle Application [TM 45]

This final workshop is the culmination of Your Journey to Wellness Programme. In this workshop we provide participants with the most advanced, cutting-edge information on longevity and brain health. We also teach the latest on the topic of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through nutrition and the use of infrared heat for personal and yogic practices.

In the toxic world we live in today, learning the most efficient ways to remove heavy metals, pollutants, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals from the body is essential for long-term health. Dr. Black approaches the topic in the additional modalities of energy, yogic lifestyles, and infrared heat.

We also discuss group settings and classes and realistic time frames for achieving optimal health including setbacks. Business practices and future career goals are examined and discussed with regard to marketing, licensing, legalities, and registrations. Individually, each student works with Dr. Black to develop a cohesive programme for their future clients that includes assessment, demonstration and assistance in performance of appropriate meditation, pranayama, and asana practices for clientele from a lens of each topic covered throughout the series (i.e. stress, autoimmune illness, trauma, etc.).

As group, we set long-term goals for our own personal wellness and future business practices and celebrate our journey through excellent food, company, and mindfulness.

In this workshop series students will:

  • Develop long-term goals for their own personal health and wellness;
  • Explore and demonstrate ways to help others develop achievable health and wellness goals
  • through meditation, mantra, chanting, pranayama and appropriate asana postures in the five categories of standing postures, forward bends, back bends, twists, and inversions;
  • Identify special needs of individual individual clients from their current health perspective, learning style, and ability and develop a programme that fits each client;
  • Demonstrate a loving, caring, and compassionate manner of communication in applying principles taught throughout the course in teaching and classes;
  • Explain their future business plans and goals including basic set up and marketing of their businesses.

Students will pay a non-refundable $500 deposit with application to reserve their place in training and specify unit dates. All fees are due on or before date of training and payment arrangements must be completed before student receives his/her final certificate. Prices are subject to change.
